THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

First Sunday after the Epiphany - A

                 Welcome to     Lutheran Church!  We thank God that you are here, and pray that God's Word will speak to your heart today.  Visitors, we hope you will join us often as we gather around the Word.  We want to know how we may serve you, so please introduce yourselves to those around you and to the Pastor.  May God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – bless our time with him and with one another here in this House dedicated to his saving Name.

THE PRELUDE –

PASTORAL GREETING

Theme of Our Worship:  Jesus, the Fulfiller of Righteousness

OPENING HYMN – Songs of Thankfulness and Praise – LSB, #394

Songs of thankfulness and praise,  Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise.

Manifested by the star  To the sages from afar,

Branch of royal David's stem  In Thy birth at Bethlehem:

Anthems be to Thee addressed,  God in flesh made manifest.

Manifest at Jordan's stream,  Prophet, Priest, and King supreme;

And at Cana wedding guest  In Thy Godhead manifest.

Manifest in pow'r divine,  Changing water into wine.

Anthems be to Thee addressed,  God in flesh made manifest.

Manifest in making whole  Palsied limbs and fainting soul;

Manifest in valiant fight,  Quelling all the devil's might;

Manifest in gracious will,  Ever bringing good from ill.

Anthems be to Thee addressed,  God in flesh made manifest.

Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord,  Present in Thy holy Word,

Grace to imitate Thee now  And be pure, as pure art Thou,

That we may become like Thee  At Thy Great Epiphany,

And may praise Thee, ever blest,  God in flesh made manifest.

Pastor:   In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL:   Amen!  What great love he has shown us, that we are called his children!

HYMN OF THE DAY To Jordan Came the Christ, Our Lord – LSB, #406

To Jordan came the Christ, our Lord,  To do His Father's pleasure.

Baptized by John, the Father's Word  Was given us to treasure.

This heav'nly washing now shall be  A cleansing from transgression,

And by His blood and agony  Release from death's oppression.

A new life now awaits us.

O hear and mark the message well,  For God Himself has spoken.

Let faith, not doubt, among us dwell  And so receive this token.

Our Lord here with His Word endows  Pure water, freely flowing.

God's Holy Spirit here avows  Our kinship while bestowing

The Baptism of His blessing.

These truths on Jordan's banks were shown  By mighty word and wonder.

The Father's voice from heav'n came down,  Which we do well to ponder:

"This man is My Beloved Son,  In whom My heart has pleasure.

Him you must hear, and Him alone,  And trust in fullest measure

The word that He has spoken."

There stood the Son of God in love,  His grace to us extending;

The Holy Spirit like a dove  Upon the scene descending;

The Triune God assuring us,  With promises compelling,

That in our Baptism He will thus  Among us find a dwelling

To comfort and sustain us.

All that the mortal eye beholds  Is water as we pour it.

Before the eye of faith unfolds  The pow'r of Jesus merit,

For here it sees the crimson flood  To all our ills bring healing;

The wonders of His precious blood  The love of God revealing

Assuring us on pardon.

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION God Bless Our Native Land – LSB, #967

God bless our native land;  Firm may she ever stand  Through storm and night.

When the wild tempests rave,  Ruler of wind and wave,

Do Thou our country save  By Thy great might.

Our fathers' God to Thee,  Author of liberty,  To Thee we sing.

Long may our land be bright  With freedom's holy light,

Protect us by Thy might,  Great God, our King!

AN OFFERTORY What Shall I Render to the Lord – LSB, Page 159

What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me?  I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call on the Name of the Lord.  I will take the cup of salvation and will call on the Name of the Lord.  I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people, in the courts of the Lord's House, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION.   Members of sister Lutheran congregations are, of course, invited to join us at the Lord's Table.  Others are requested to consult with the Pastor before communing with us the first time.  In this way you will help us be responsible in our administration of the Sacrament – and you, in turn, will be blessed as you commune with us.

     NOTE:   In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to abstain from alcohol for personal reasons.

A SONG OF PRAISE – The SanctusLSB, Page 161

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might:  Heav'n and earth are full of Your glory.  Hosanna!  Hosanna!  Hosanna in the highest!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!

Pastor:  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on us, and have given Your only-begotten Son so that whoever believes in him will not perish but will have eternal life.

ALL:  Send now Your Holy Spirit into our hearts that he may establish in us a living faith. Prepare us joyfully to remember our Redeemer and faithfully to receive him as he comes to us in his body and blood.  Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;   And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD

Pastor:   The peace of the Lord be with you always.

ALL:   And also with you.

BEFORE WE COMMUNE – The Agnus Dei – LSB, Page 163

THE HOLY COMMUNION

HYMN – O Lord, We Praise Thee – LSB, #617

O Lord, we praise Thee, bless Thee, and adore Thee,  In thanksgiving bow before Thee.

Thou with Thy body and Thy blood dost nourish  Our weak souls that they may flourish.

O Lord, have mercy!

May Thy body, Lord, born of Mary,  That our sins and sorrows did carry,

And Thy blood for us plead  In all trial, fear, and need.  O Lord, have mercy!

Thy holy body into death was given, Life to win for us in heaven.

No greater love than this to Thee could bind us; May this Feast thereof remind us!

O Lord, have mercy!

Lord, Thy kindness did so constrain Thee  That Thy blood should bless and sustain me.

All our debt Thou hast paid;  Peace with God once more is made.  O Lord, have mercy!

May God bestow on us His grace and favor  That we follow Christ our Savior,

And live together here in love and union, Nor despise this blessed Communion!

O Lord, have mercy!

Let not Thy good Spirit forsake us,  But that heav'nly-minded He make us;

Give Thy Church, Lord, to see  Days of peace and unity.  O Lord, have mercy!

HYMN All Who Believe and Are Baptized – LSB, #601

All who believe and are baptized  Shall see the Lord's salvation;

Baptized into the death of Christ,  We are a new creation.

Through Christ's redemption we will stand  Among the glorious heav'nly band

Of every tribe and nation.

With one accord, O God, we pray,  Grant us Your Holy Spirit;

Help us in our infirmity  Through Jesus' blood and merit.

Grant us to grow in grace each day  By Holy Baptism that we may

Eternal life inherit.

A SONG OF THANKSGIVING Thank the Lord – LSB, page 164

Thank the Lord and sing his praise; tell everyone what he has done.  Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name.  He recalls his promises and leads his people forth in joy  With shouts of thanksgiving.  Alleluia, Alleluia!

CLOSING HYMN – Mighty Father, You Once Formed Me – (Tune:  LBW, #725)

Mighty Father, You once formed me,  Fed me, healed me, clothed me, warmed me.

You watch o'er my steps – wherever;  Father, I am Yours forever.

Conq'ring Savior, You once bought me,  Shed Your blood, so keenly sought me.

Safe from sin, death, hell – whatever;  Savior, I am Yours forever.

Vibrant Spirit, You once claimed me,  Made me new within and tamed me.

I'll trade earth for heav'n – whenever;  Spirit, I am Yours forever.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,  I'll sing this to all who'll hear it:

There's no one like You – whoever;  Triune God, I'm Yours forever.

(Words by Howard W. Kramer.  Used by permission.)

[After the Sermon continue with THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH  and the service that follows.]

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Father in heaven, we rejoice this day that, at his Baptism by John, our Lord Jesus declared that thus he was fulfilling all righteousness.  In his words we find great assurance that as our Brother he lived for us, to win Your gift of righteousness for us.

ALL:   We rejoice even more because, at his Baptism, You declared him to be Your Son, whom You love, and in whom You are well pleased.  That our salvation was won by none other than the Son of God gives us even greater assurance.

Pastor:  Anoint us with his Spirit, Father, so his gift of salvation will move us and empower us to imitate him in lives that display Your righteousness.

ALL:   Then we will indeed consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to You in Christ Jesus – and will do our best to display to those around us that Christ lives in us.

Pastor: We bring some of them, our families and friends, to You again this day, seeking that help and healing for those experiencing difficult times, and rejoicing with those who are celebrating happy circumstances.  We name before You . . . .  In our hearts we commend to Your care also these who are near and dear to each of us . . . .  Deepen their awareness that, whether in good times or bad times, You are with them to guide and bless them.

ALL:  Lead all of us, Your children, to put our trust in You and to follow Your Son faithfully in lives of Christian discipleship.

Pastor:  Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Hear us and bless us as we pray in his Name:

ALL:   Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;   And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
