SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - B

Welcome to     Lutheran Church!  We thank God you are here and pray that God's Word will speak to your heart today.  Visitors, we hope you will join us often as we gather around the Word.  We want to know how we may serve you, so please join our members in filling out an attendance card.  Pass it to the center aisle – to be collected by the ushers during the Hymn of the Day.  Also, please introduce yourself to those around you and to the Pastor.  Feel free to use a Prayer Request Card so the Pastor can include your concern in the Prayer of the Church.

To help parents of young children, the congregation provides Child Care during the Sunday morning services.  You certainly are welcome and encouraged to let us serve your family in this way.  If you are not sure where the Child Care Room is,  just ask an usher.

THE PRELUDE –

PASTORAL GREETING

Theme of Our Worship:  Honoring God's Prophet

OPENING HYMNRejoice , O Pilgrim ThrongLW, #455

Rejoice, O pilgrim throng!  Rejoice, give thanks, and sing!

Your festal banner wave on high,  The cross of Christ your king.

Rejoice!  Rejoice!  Rejoice, give thanks and sing!

With voice as full and strong  As ocean's surging praise,

Send forth the sturdy hymns of old,  The psalms of ancient days.   (Refrain)

(Women:)  With all the angel choirs,  With all the saints on earth

Pour out the strains of joy and bliss,  True rapture, noblest mirth.  (All sing Refrain)

(Men:)  Still lift your standard high,  Still march in firm array,

As pilgrims through the darkness wend  Till dawns the golden day.  (All sing Refrain)

At last the march shall end;  The wearied ones shall rest;

The pilgrims find their home at last,  Jerusalem the blest.  (Refrain)

Praise him who reigns on high,  The Lord whom we adore:

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,  One God forevermore.  (Refrain)

Pastor:   In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL:   Amen!  We have ears to hear.  Let's listen carefully to what he has to say to us.

HYMN OF THE DAY – O Word of God Incarnate – LW, #335

O Word of God incarnate,  O Wisdom from on high,

O Truth unchanged, unchanging,  O Light of our dark sky:

We praise You for the radiance  That from the hallowed page,

A lantern to our footsteps,  Shines on from age to age.

The Church from You, dear Master,  Received the gift divine;

And still that light is lifted  O'er all the earth to shine.

It is the chart and compass  That, all life's journey through,

Mid mists and rocks and quicksands  Still guides, O Christ, to You.

Oh, make Your Church, dear Savior,  A lamp of burnished gold

To bear before the nations  Your true light as of old!

Oh, teach Your wand'ring pilgrims  By this our path to trace

Till, clouds and darkness ended,  We see You face to face!

THE SERMON:

[If Holy Communion is not being celebrated, continue with THE APOSTLES CREED and the order of service that follows it.  It is detailed at the end of this service.]

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; begotten of his Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.  And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION – God Bless America

God bless America,  Land that I love;

Stand beside her, and guide her,  Through the night with the light from above.

From the mountains  To the prairies  To the oceans  White with foam,

God bless America,  My home sweet home.

From the mountains  To the prairies  To the oceans  White with foam,

God bless America,  My home sweet home.

AN OFFERTORY Create in Me – LW, Page 175

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit.

REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION.   Members of sister Lutheran congregations are, of course, invited to join us at the Lord's Table.  Others are requested to consult with the Pastor before communing with us the first time.  In this way you will help us be responsible in our administration of the Sacrament – and you, in turn, will be blessed as you commune with us.

NOTE:   In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to abstain from alcohol for personal reasons.

Pastor:  We do lift our hearts to You in thanks and praise, O Lord, as we come with joy to our Holy Communion in Your body and blood.  With grateful hearts we pray together the Church's Table Prayer, in the words You taught:

ALL:   Our Father who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

HYMN O Living Bread from Heaven – LW, #244 (Tune: #251)

O Living Bread from Heaven,  How well You feed Your guests!

The gifts You here have given  Now fill our hearts with rest.

Oh, wondrous food of blessing,  Oh, cup that heals our woes!

Our hearts, this gift possessing,  With praises overflows.

(Women:)  Lord, lovingly You lead us  Within Your holiest place,

And You Yourself now feed us  With treasures of Your grace.

For You have freely given  What earth can ne'er supply,

The Bread of Life from heaven,  That now we shall not die.

(Men:)  Lord, all we need You give us –  This food that death destroys.

And You so freely grant us  The cup of endless joys.

O Lord, we do not merit  The favor You have shown.

With all our soul and spirit  We bow before Your throne.

How lovingly You feed us  With manna from above!

How graciously You lead us,  To love as You have loved!

And when You call our spirits  To leave this world below,

We'll enter, through Your merits,  Where joys unmingled flow!

HYMN Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing – LW, #276

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing  Our great Redeemer's praise,

The glories of our God and King,  The triumphs of his grace!

Our gracious Master and our God,  Assist us to proclaim,

To spread through all the earth abroad  The honors of Your Name.

(Women)  The Name of Jesus calms our fears   And bids our sorrows cease,

Sings music to the sinner's ears,  Brings life and health and peace.

He breaks the pow'r of canceled sin;  He sets the pris'ner free.

His blood that makes the foulest clean  Avails for you and me.

Look to the Lord who did atone  For sin, O fallen race.

Look and be saved through faith alone,  Be justified by grace.

(Men)  See all our sins on Jesus laid;  The Lamb of God was slain.

His life was once an off'ring made  That we might live again.

To God all glory, praise, and love  Be now and ever giv'n

By saints below and saints above,  The Church in earth and heav'n.

A SONG OF THANKSGIVING Thank the Lord – LW, page 173

Thank the Lord and sing his praise; tell everyone what he has done.

Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name.

He recalls his promises and leads his people forth in joy

With shouts of thanksgiving.  Alleluia, Alleluia!

Pastor:   We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us once again through this life-renewing gift.

ALL:   In Your mercy, strengthen us through this Holy Sacrament in faith toward You, and in fervent love toward one another.  We pray in the Name of him through whom we know Your love for us, Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Pastor:  The Lord bless you and keep you.  The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.  The Lord look on you with favor, and give you peace.

ALL:   Amen!  We see his glory in the face of Jesus Christ!

[After the Sermon continue the service with THE APOSTLES CREED and use this form to the end.]

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:   Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Father in heaven, those who were Your Son's neighbors at Nazareth did not see him for who he is, because they could not get beyond his humanity.

ALL:   Grant that we may never become so 'comfortable' with him, as our Brother and Savior, that we fail to honor and obey him as our Lord.

Pastor:   He comes to us to speak to us Your Good Word of life and salvation.

ALL:   Having heard him again today, we surely have to know that Your Prophet has been among us.

Pastor:  Send Your Spirit to work with divine power through all who represent You and Your Son, the Lord Jesus, as they proclaim Your Word.

ALL:   Let that blessing rest on our Pastor and on all who are involved with teaching the Word in the Sunday School and Bible Classes here in our congregation.

Pastor:  Then keep all of us mindful that we are to speak up for You and Your Son also in our daily activities.  Teach us respond joyfully to opportunities Your Holy Spirit provides for our Christian witness.

ALL:  Then all those with whom we come into contact will know that Your prophets, Your spokesmen and spokeswomen, have been among them.

Pastor:   We keep Your gracious promises in mind as we bring to You our friends and families in their particular circumstances.  Touch the troubled with healing and help as they look to You.  Bless those celebrating good things with ability to see Your hand behind them.   We name before You . . . .  In our hearts we commend to Your care  also these who are near and dear to each of us. . . .  We place them all into Your hand for guidance and for blessing.

ALL:   Bestow Your blessing on all of us, so we may continue to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pastor:   Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord.  We rejoice to pray with his disciples everywhere as he taught us:

ALL:   Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
