______ SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Christian Education Sunday

                Welcome to     Lutheran Church!  We thank God that you are here, and pray that God's Word will speak to your heart today.  Visitors, we hope you will join us often as we gather around the Word.  We want to know how we may serve you, so please introduce yourselves to those around you and to the Pastor.  May God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – bless our time with him and with one another here in this House dedicated to his saving Name.

THE PRELUDE –

PASTORAL GREETING

Theme of our Worship:  The Source of Wisdom

A HYMN OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION – Shepherd of Tender Youth – LSB, #864

Shepherd of tender youth,  Guiding in love and truth  Through devious ways;

Christ, our triumphant King,  We come Your name to sing

And here our children bring  To join Your praise.

You are the holy Lord,  O all-subduing Word,  Healer of strife.

You did Yourself abase  That from sin's deep disgrace

You thus might save our race  And give us life.

You are our great High Priest;  You have prepared the feast  Of holy love;

And in our mortal pain  None calls on You in vain.

Our plea do not disdain,  Help from above.

Pastor:  In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

ALL:  Amen!  We are here as his disciples, to have him teach us his saving Truth!

Responsive Opening Liturgy formatted as you will receive the Services:)

(Singing)  Oh, ever be our Guide,  Our Shepherd and our Pride, Our Staff and Song.

Jesus, O Christ of God,  By Your enduring Word,

Lead us where You have trod;  Make our faith strong.

So now, and till we die,  Sound we Your praises high  And joyful sing;

Infants and the glad throng  Who to the Church belong

Unite to swell the song  To Christ, our King.

Pastor:  The Lord be with you.

ALL:   And also with you.

Pastor:  Let us pray together to the Lord.

ALL:  Lord of all, You are the Giver of all good things!  Best of all, You have given us Your Word – especially the Good News of Your Son.  As we hear Your Word, fill our hearts with love for our Savior, and deepen our commitment to the Christian education of our children and youth.  We pray in the Name of him who came to be the Revealer of Your saving love, Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY O Word of God Incarnate – LSB, #523

O Word of God incarnate,  O Wisdom from on high,

O Truth unchanged, unchanging,  O Light of our dark sky:

We praise You for the radiance  That from the hallowed page,

A lantern to our footsteps,  Shines on from age to age.

The Church from You, dear Master,  Received the gift divine;

And still that light is lifted  O'er all the earth to shine.

It is the chart and compass  That, all life's journey through,

Mid mists and rocks and quicksands  Still guides, O Christ to You.

Oh, make Your Church, dear Savior,  A lamp of burnished gold

To bear before Your children  Your true light as of old!

Oh, teach us, Your disciples,  By this our path to trace

Till, clouds and darkness ended,  We see You face to face.

THE SERMON:

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION – God Bless America

God bless America,  Land that I love;

Stand beside her, and guide her,  Through the night with the light from above.

From the mountains  To the prairies  To the oceans  White with foam,

God bless America,  My home sweet home.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your free Spirit.

REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION.   Members of sister Lutheran congregations are, of course, invited to join us at the Lord's Table.  Others are requested to consult with the Pastor before communing with us the first time.  In this way you will help us be responsible in our administration of the Sacrament – and you, in turn, will be blessed as you commune with us.

     NOTE:   In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to abstain from alcohol for personal reasons.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

HYMN Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord – LSB, # 637

Draw near and take the body of the Lord,

And drink the holy blood for you outpoured;

Offered was he for greatest and for least,

Himself the Victim and himself the Priest.

He who his saints in this world rules and shields,

To all believers life eternal yields;

With heavenly bread he makes the hungry whole,

Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.

Come forward, then, with faithful hearts sincere,

And take the pledges of salvation here.

O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow

As in this Feast of Love You bless us now.

HYMN Our Father By Whose Name – LSB, #863

Our Father, by whose Name  All fatherhood is known,

Who dost in love proclaim  Each family Thine own,

Bless Thou all parents, guarding well,  With constant love as sentinel,

The homes in which Thy people dwell.

O Christ, Thyself a child  Within an earthly home,

With heart still undefiled  Thou didst to manhood come.

Our children bless in every place  That they may all behold Thy face

And, knowing Thee, may grow in grace.

O Spirit, who dost bind  Our hearts in unity,

Who teachest us to find  The love from self set free,

In all our hearts such love increase  That ev'ry home by this release

May be the dwelling place of peace.

A SONG OF THANKSGIVING Thank the Lord – LSB, page 164

Thank the Lord and sing his praise; tell everyone what he has done.  Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name.  He recalls his promises and leads his people forth in joy  With shouts of thanksgiving.  Alleluia, Alleluia!

Pastor:  O God the Father, we have been fed once again with heavenly Food.  In the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus we have tasted again the Truth of Your forgiving love.

ALL: Renew our hearts and redirect our spirits so we may carry this life-giving experience with us into the days ahead.  We want to walk in ways that please You, for You have brought us into the Kingdom of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Pastor:  The Lord bless you and keep you.  The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.  The Lord look upon you with favor, and give you peace.

ALL:   Amen!  We have ears to hear.  Let us hear and do what our Lord has said to us.

CLOSING HYMN – How Blessed the Church – LSB, #862

How blessed the church, whate'er befall,  Where Jesus Christ is all in all!

For if He were not dwelling there,  How dark and poor and void it were!

How blessed the church where faith is found  And all in hope and love abound,

They trust their God and serve Him still,  And do in all His holy will!

How blessed that church; it prospers well!  In peace and joy its members dwell,

And in their fam'lies' lives is shown  How richly God can bless His own!

Then join me, friends, on this Lord's Day  A covenant to make and say:

Though all the world forsake his Word,  We pledge ourselves to serve the Lord!

THE POSTLUDE

+   +   +   +   +   +   +

[When the service does not include Holy Communion, after the Sermon continue the service with THE NICENE CREED FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY and use this form to the end.]

THE NICENE CREED FOR

I live my daily life in relation to one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

I have surrendered my life to the one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father.  By him all things were made.

I stake my life and build my faith on the fact that for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man.  He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead.  His kingdom will never end.

I have been renewed and my spirit is nourished by the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

I live as a member of Christ's Body in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.  I acknowledge and share in one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Father in heaven, we thank and praise You that we have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of the imperishable, through Your living and enduring Word.

ALL:  We know it is true of us, as it is of all mankind – that we are like grass and our glory is like the flowers of the field.  The grass withers and the flowers fall.  But Your Word, O Lord, stands forever.

Pastor: We pray, then, that Your Holy Spirit would direct our lives always to the eternal values that may be found only in life in Your Kingdom.

ALL:  And we pray that, by word and by example, we may be able to convey to our children and grandchildren that life without Jesus ends up empty and futile, while life with him is eternally fulfilling.

Pastor:  With all that in mind, we thank You today for Your gift to us of _____ Lutheran School and Sunday School.  We ask You to make of these agencies of Christian Education true workshops of the Holy Spirit.

ALL:   Bless those who teach, so they may be Your faithful instruments to bless their students in body, soul, and spirit.  Bless their students, so they may eagerly hear and learn all their subjects as they prepare for purposeful lives.  Make them  especially attuned to Your Word, growing always in faith and discipleship.

Pastor:  Be with all of us, so we may never consider ourselves to be "graduates" of Your school, and, as a result, become neglectful of our own study of Your Word.

ALL:   Lead us rather to imitate the first Christians in their desire to hear and understand and meditate on the teachings of the apostles.  We, too, rejoice to be regular participants in worship and communing.  Lead us beyond that to Bible Classes and to our own personal study, so we learn to chew on some of the meat Your Word provides to strengthen our faith and life.

Pastor: We again bring to You, Father, those in special circumstances of need and special circumstances of celebration.  Today, we name before You . . . In our hearts we commend to Your care also these who are near and dear to each of us . . . .  Continue to hold them in Your gracious care.

ALL:   Give to all of us the assurance that You are with us to bless us day by day, and that You work for our good in every circumstance of life.  Father, we commit ourselves to that blessed outlook in all of life.

Pastor:  Father, we commit ourselves to the blessing of life in Your Kingdom as we join in the prayer Your Son has taught us – and add Martin Luther's explanations:

A RESPONSIVE LORD'S PRAYER with Martin Luther's explanations.

ALL:  Our Father, who art in heaven,

Pastor:  God thus encourages us to believe that he truly is our Father and we are his children.

ALL:  Hallowed be Thy name.

Pastor:  This is done when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity.  We pray that we, as children of God, may live in harmony with its teaching.

ALL:  Thy kingdom come.

Pastor:  This happens as our heavenly Father gives us his Holy Spirit.  We pray that thus we believe his holy Word and live godly lives to his glory.

ALL:  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Pastor:  This happens as God hinders and defeats every evil scheme and purpose which would defame his name and oppose the coming of his kingdom.  We pray that we may keep his name holy, and may live new lives in his kingdom.

ALL:  Give us this day our daily bread.

Pastor:  This happens as God gives us everything needed for this life.  We pray that we may recognize him as the Giver, receive our daily bread with thanks, and gladly share with those in need.

ALL:  Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Pastor:  We pray that our Father in heaven would not hold our sins against us and would give us everything by grace.  So may we, on our part, heartily forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.

ALL:  And lead us not into temptation.

Pastor:   We pray that God would watch over us and keep us, so the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh may not deceive us and draw us into false belief and great and shameful sins – and, when we are tempted, that we may win the victory.

ALL:  But deliver us from evil.

Pastor:  We pray that our heavenly Father would save us from every evil to body and soul, and at the last hour mercifully take us to himself in heaven.

ALL:  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.

Pastor  He truly is the One to whom to pray.  We give all glory to our Father in heaven.

ALL:  Amen.

Pastor:  So let it be, Father.  It is our Lord Jesus who has taught us to pray, and has promised that You will hear us.
